During the first week of June 2004, Ruthie was not feeling well. During a check-up with her veterinarian, it was discovered that Ruthie had Thrombocytopenia. She was lacking the component of the blood necessary for clotting. This can be caused by an autoimmune problem, parasaite-borne disease(s), or cancer. After treating Ruthie with steroids, antibiotics, and chemotherapy, her blood levels began to return to normal. Tests were run in an attempt to discover the cause of this problem. There was no evidence of an autoimmune problem or parasite borne diseases or even infectious diseases. We then began to see physical symptoms of lesions in her spinal cord and brain stem. Right sided weakness progressed through the next week. On June 28th we made the very difficult decision to end Ruthie's suffering. Ruthie exceeded our expectations in every way but one: she as the very best companion--loving, faithful and silly, she was a Champion of AKC record and of our hearts, and she produced wonderful children. Our only disappointment was that she did not live for many more years. While we are blessed to see the very best of her qualities in her children, we will miss her.
