Two needles are used, a slip knot is made on one, and the number of stitches needed is “cast on” by wrapping the yarn over this needle and drawing it through loops on the other needle. Many combinations of stitches are possible, resulting in an endless variety of pattern.
Another closely related technique is crocheting.
A slip stitch is made by wrapping the yarn over a hook, and then a loop is pulled through. This is called the chain stitch, and from a row of these, other rows are added. If so desired, the stitches may be joined to create a ring and then worked around. Lighter yarns produce softness, while thicker yarns produce sturdiness. Different fashion and home décor accessories, with attractively textured or raised details are thus easily created. Lacy projects like doilies or string or cord lend themselves effortlessly with this method.
Also often employed is plain yarn crafting.
